Revision for English Lit

I’m using the past paper from 2013

I would do question 17. I would analyse the grammar as mr birling becomes shaken which is evident through the use of elipsis and full stops. Then i would say how it has affected the characters who are not remorseful this makes the audience aware that the telephone call is because not everybody changed. He done this because he had an agenda when writing this play.

TKAM question

i would talk about the metaphor showing him as a rooster which shows he is filling with pride as roosters are known for having physical features which we associate with pride such as puffed up chest. Lee uses grammar to show atticus as relaxed as there is nothing which shows rush this also combined with the description of him moving leisurely that he is relaxed. I would also talk about the contradiction of scouts ideas such as Atticus going against something which he had taught her (the questioning of mr. ewell when he doesn’t know the answer) this inst something atticus would do usually and it makes the audience uncertain as this is extremely weird for atticus.

Compare Tom with Boo and Rolphus Daymond. ideas about prejudice. Idea about loss of innocence in scout and jem and dill. Mockingbird is used to represent innocence.

Sir how many points are we expected to make on each question?

Revision for Language

Well first of all being a biological enthusiast I couldn’t pass the opportunity to visit one of few if any places in the world in  which you can still see the rain-forest in its beautiful untouched state. As well as this factor I though it could be a good way to introduce ,my daughter, Julia to Biology. Not to mention that it also counted as a holiday. With the countless masses of different species within Kapawi I believed it to be a truly once in a lifetime spectacle, and I wanted to share this experience with my daughter. Julia enjoyed seeing and exploring the Amazon rain forest as did I. The rain forest in this particular area of Ecuador is in fact so secluded that not only are the animals untouched but there are indigenous tribes which have lived there with there lives unchanged but technological advancements. I thought this to be extraordinary considering how reliant man y people are in technology these days. Julia also enjoyed investigating and learning about the indigenous tribes, also learning their culture. My wife and I wondered  whether it was the right time to go and see Kapawi, but with places like this becoming seldom sights we believed it was our last chance. This is also the reason i brought Julia as I think this will be the only chance she will get to experience and truly immerse herself in to an experience such as this.

Julia’s accident came about as a result of a flash flood which was unforeseen and as a result we were ill prepared. The flash flood happened so quickly it was hard for us to prepare and once it was in full swing there was no chance of avoiding it if you were in a bad position. Unfortunately Julia was, that could of been anyone of us. Julia was swept away almost instantly and out of sight before we could even scream her name, I’m just glad that we had taught her all of those survival skills which was undeniably one of the most important reasons she escaped that incident with her full health. Once she was awake she knew that staying awake was crucial and if she did not then the Jungle would consume her. Earlier she said that she imagined us telling her “to never give up” and “keep fighting”, this helped her morale substantially and carried her all the way to the river bank. Julia survived as a result of the training that we had given her prior to this trip and without it Julia may not have been here  with us today.

The Achuar people are one of a kind and are incredible with their extensive and vast knowledge of the jungle and how it works. We owe them our daughters life.  once we gave the alarm that our daughter was in danger they spread out and searched efficiently and systematically, because of this they were able to find her before any real damage was caused, minor scratches and bites were the only real problem. we were encouraged to take Julia to a hospital which was several hundred miles away it was tempting especially considering that we did not know how bad her condition was. It was almost at the same instance that I had decided to take her to the  real hospital that I seen a young Achuar nurse attending Julia, and in no time I seen the colour return to her face and all the bumps and scratches decrease in size and ferocity dramatically. The young girl had used a concoction of different plants and roots to help revive Julia to consciousness. After this we respected the Achuar people and their way of life relentlessly.

An inspector calls 2

The author here depicts mr Birlings arrogance and disrespect of the lower classes which he himself is from. Many people who would of watched this play would of been from a lower class than mr Birling is from. The author would have done this intentionally to provoke the audience to make the people dislike him as he is almost enforcing the fact that those in the lower classes are destined to stay there which is in fact hypocritical of his past. I think this helps people side with the inspector as he clearly has an increased sense of loathing for mr and mrs Birling. We know mr Birling thinks because of a comment he made early on in the first act ” You’d think everybody has to look after everybody else, as if we’re all mixed up together like bees in a hive.” This quote is actually very stupid from a man which has a great sense of arrogance. He states that people are saying that we should act like bees and help each other out. By this he is meaning that we should move towards a more communist outlook on how wealth is distributed. Although in a bee hive you have a heir achy system where the worker bees slave away their whole life to benefit the queen bee. which is in fact very similar to the way his own business is run. Thus highlighting his heightened stupidity. This has been used to make the audience dislike mr Birling and has done so very well as i find myself viewing him as an obnoxious stupid and hypocritical imbecil.

English revision An inspector calls 1

The author here has deliberately used their knowledge of historical events to portray Birling as arrogant, ignorant and conceited. We know this because the book was written in 1940-1943 which would mean the author would have knowledge of all events which were mentioned. “you’ll hear some people say war is inevitable. And to that i say Fiddlesticks!” this is an opportunity where his arrogance and ignorance is displayed as a strong opinion which comes to be extremely wrong. The author has used Dramatic irony here as this play was first viewed in October 1946 which would have been right after the second world war and the subject of war with the Germans would not only be a controversial topic but a well known one.

England argue piece

England, the co-founding fathers of the beautiful game known as football. With age comes wisdom and knowledge, not with this team. With age comes strength and experience, not with this team. With age comes triumph and glory, not with this team. Should a team with no depth, effect on the game or developed style of play be ranked 10th in the world? No. How can I stress the fact that England’s national squad isn’t strong enough, it is merely a fox among hounds.

Complacency is a problem that manifests and thrives in the England squad. Many players become too conceited due to their club achievements, yet they fail to perform on an international stage. This is a problem as players get used to being chosen for the starting eleven and feel they wont be dropped. One player in particular is Joe Hart; I believe that he should be benched for a few games. I’m certain Hart believes he is invincible. Harts over inflated ego makes him feel he has no competition, this is not helped by football pundits exaggerating Hart’s importance in the squad. I will agree that he is an outstanding goalkeeper, but for his reputation he just isn’t up to scratch. Therefore a couple of games on the bench wouldn’t hurt as we have seen from Manchester City this season. I think England needs more competition in their squad as that is what drives players to stay at the top of their game.

Something that I find exasperating is the constant struggle against, what people consider, “lesser” teams.  By using the term lesser I mean in contexts of the FIFA world rankings which I would consider extremely biased. Of course to a certain degree we are a team that consists of quality players, yet when pitted against these apparently inferior teams we seem to struggle. When we do win it is generally against the run of play and it is seen as lucky. For example look at the recent match versus Chile, surprise surprise we lost. How is such a well renowned team like England losing to Chile? Chile do have some real talent in their squad such as Sanchez, Vidal and Vargas but really a side of that eminence shouldn’t be challenging England. We rarely see this problem of England struggling, against big teams. this is because they are almost always on the back-foot after ten minutes. This aggravates my usually passive nature and I find my self shouting vile names at the telly. Chile outplayed England even in their football, they played beautifully and charasmatically while England played it “safe” with their beloved route one tactic. This makes me wonder would a fan of a similar temperament as me, get as angry when supporting the likes of Spain, Brazil or Germany?

When you think of great passages of play who do you think of? England? Didn’t think so, let me guess who you thought of: Spain, Brazil, Argentina or Germany. This left me wondering, what are England actually good at? Long balls. That’s it. I do not understand how England can even score when all they do is monotonously hoof the ball forward, like the fat kid that always gets picked last and is destined to play in defence. People may try and defend England by saying that they get limited training time; but so do all the other top flight nations. Do you hear any other teams moaning about limited training time? No the training is sufficient. The reason we moan is because we find it hard to accept the inevitable that England will never get past the round of sixteen.

England has an abundance of potential in their youth squad, we have the likes of; Zaha, Ince, Danny Rose, Luke Shaw and many more. The young talent from our country is of a high standard. The youth in  our squad are like black belts, they are good as they are, but given the right training and time they will flourish into masters. They also need to allow the youngsters to make mistakes and learn from it. Although this is not possible as whenever a new potential star is named he is immediately rushed into the starting line up. I do understand the need for this; England needs depth in their squad but why rush a process that takes time? We look all over the world and we see young talent growing, yet in England they continue to ruin what looks to be another group of promising stars on the rise.

To conclude I feel England can grow to become a great footballing nation again, but only if the correct time is allotted to the youth. Also if they do not start to increase their winning form, fans will become even more disheartened and and move to despair. If they do not start picking up their winning form, the columns of England’s patriotism will come crushing down on the Lions below.

IGCSE Response: Ice bucket challenge: who’s pouring cold water on the idea?

The Guardian article ‘Ice bucket challenge: who’s pouring cold water on the idea?’ by Steve Rose, is a piece that should be read by all people, primarily because it brings forward the many problems that arise as a result of this phenomena. I’m pretty sure we are all aware of what happens when one takes part in this viral driven craze. Well if you are not, and have been living in solitary confinement for the past two months, it consists of pouring a bucket of ice cold water over yourself and then nominating others to do the same. The charitable aspect of this aspect is that each participant is supposed to donate $100 to the ALS foundation, although I do not think the trend that has recently swept over the world is as virtuous as it would seem.

When watching the constant bombardment of ice bucket videos, the most important aspect of this is neglected. In many of these videos we see people talking about who nominated them and who they’re nominating, but the the most significant and key aspect is to raise money, yet people choose to withhold whether they have donated or not.  Rose tells us that this comes across as more of a, ‘wasteful PR exercises [rather] than charitable gestures.’ This highlights the fact that many people use this challenge as an excuse to show off and not as a sincere act of kindness. I agree with Rose as it is not effective and is a way to portray yourself as genorous this is because the donation is ambiguous. This either means they didn’t donate, or we should infer that a payment was made. This makes the charitable aspect confused and lost especially with a younger generation full of narcissism.

I know from personal experience that many young people do not donate, this is partly to do with their ignorance. However the confusion of how and what you do to donate also helps. I think this could be helped if famous icons had made the process, or the fact that you have to contribute to the ALS foundation a clear requirement for participants. I’m also pretty certain that we all feel a sense of fulfilment when we help out others. The payment in this is ambiguous therefore people can “show” charitable they are and what a great person they are. This really annoys me. Don’t get me wrong I do like the whole concept of doing a task to get people involved and to add some competitiveness to it. Although I think its been hijacked and ran away with as a way for people to impress insignificant others, when in reality they are doing nothing more than pouring a bucket of water over their head. Whilst wasting water that is so heavily desired upon by many people around the world.

Personally the idea of pouring water over ourselves to raise money for charity whilst ignoring the fact there are droughts around the world is wrong. How can we use a resource which is scarce to raise money for one thing whilst neglecting and almost belittling the importance of other conditions. In the article Steve Rose states ‘California has been witnessing one of the worst droughts they have ever had.’ This shows that scarcity is not just a problem in area’s such as East Africa, it is in places which we would not associate with droughts. Does it mean we can neglect other issues as long as its raising money for another? ALS patients are only a small proportion of the world, whilst droughts take place in many countries all over the world every year affecting millions of people. Yet we will waste a resource which is so highly sought after by millions of people.

To me that is unethical, I am not at all condemning the intentions behind it, but maybe a little bit more thought could have been put in to it. There are examples of people who have taken it upon themselves to change a matter which they deem a more fit purpose. Such as the examples that Rose has given us; Charlie Sheen poured a bucket full of money over his head instead of wasting water. Additionally Rose tells us about an alternative called ‘the rice bucket challenge’, which he believes is more sustainable. This consists of giving a bucket of rice to a less fortunate family. Surely this is more ethical than the mass waste of water that has taken place these past couple of months. I personally agree with him as this definetly seems not only more ethical, but extremely efficient.

When all points have been considered I agree with a vast majority of Rose’s argument. The ice bucket challenge is a good attempt at a refurbishment of the way in which we take part in charitable matters. Although there are a few drawbacks to this specific attempt; I would like to see more of these in the future as it looks like we’re going in the right direction. next time I would like to see a heavier emphasis on the younger generations contribution to such efforts.

IGCSE Coursework – Now & Then

The epitome of his outlook on life. It was dull, filled with anxiety and last of all it was a ball of social expectations and pressures which he would inevitably gravitate to in some way. As he peered across the room timidly he couldn’t help but feel as though a slightly menacing atmosphere loomed over it, despite the many attempts to brighten the room with posters that consisted ,mainly of bright colours, with useless information which he unfathomable as to how any body could learn from these. it all seemed to bleed like watercolours in to one another. The teacher who stood at the front consistently seemed to reassure them they would have a good day, although if you looked carefully you could see a glint of pain, as he recalled his first day. The many attempts to reassure the boy only made him feel worse. The windows wept as the bitterness of the september morning seeped into the room and infected all inhabitants with a sense of impending disappointment.

BOOP!

BOOP!

BOOP!

Registration had ended the boy hurried to his first lesson loathsomely. His first lesson was maths which he immediately began to resent. First lesson was Algebra. Imagine two truly bleak and mentally depleting subjects, which in this case were English and Maths, combined in some sort of contortment to come to together to make what could only be described as cutting the webbing of ones toes with paper cuts and then submerging them into vinegar while your feet are being scoured with sandpaper. No matter what the boy thought he knew that  he would have at least five years of this left possibly seven if he went to the sixth form there, although he quickly removed any idea of that in his mind. The maths class followed the same trend which was set by his form room a dull room desperately trying to trick its occupiers that it was somewhat cheerful. He was surprised (in a good way, which was a first for this place) that the teacher spoke in a soothing tone which almost aided him on his trickle into a deep sleep which was a combination of the monotonousness of the lesson and the fact he stayed up late the previous night worrying about the morning. He knew worrying wouldn’t help him but nonetheless he couldn’t, or more importantly wouldn’t stop. When he had woke up the sky was dark his room was the world felt dark. He drearily and unwillingly pulled and dragged his trousers over his knees and around his waist. As he hauled the shirt over and for a brief moment his life was brightened by the surprising whiteness of his shirt. When he got in the car the boy couldn’t help but think that his parents were happier than him but he put on his acting (which got him where he is) and nobody would second guess his emotion that morning; sheer excitement. That was until he left his parents, and once again everybody could tell, he didn’t want to be there.

Controlled Assessment

In this essay I will be analysing the ways in which characters flaws are shown in Othello, Porphyria’s lover and Soliloquy of the Spanish cloister. I believe that these flaws act as a catalyst to help push the story along. This being said, many of the characters have flaws which lead directly to their downfall. Which is what the category of tragedy is based around. The flaws which most of these characters have are often human errors which we often cannot help.

I believe that Othello’s jealousy is the main reason for his downfall, although he does have other flaws in his character, his envy is displayed when Iago warns him of jealousy and foreshadows the finale of the play. ”O beware, my lord, of jealousy it is the green eyed monster which doth mock the meat it feeds on.” This quote is taken directly from the scene in which Iago is first hinting that Desdemona is cheating on Othello and he warns him not to be jealous. Here Shakespeare has used a metaphor to display jealousy, he has depicted it as a “green eyed monster” green is often the colour associated with jealousy and the fact that he has illustrated it as a monster tells us that it is definitely a negative thing, which will inflict some harm to Othello. Although we know that Othello can prevent this monster from bringing harm to himself as Shakespeare says that it “doth mock the meat it feeds on.” The key word in this sentence is feed, as to feed on something you are not putting any strain on one’s self to eat which is contrary to it being called a monster. As monster stereo typically are considered predators, this would mean that Othello is almost offering himself to this monster by succumbing to jealousy. This here speeds up the demise of Othello and foreshadows the ending to the audience as we could compare Iago to this monster.

In “Porphyria’s lover” many metaphors are used to show the lust between Porphyria and the narrator. The metaphor which is used to depict his lust, which is his main downfall. “Straight she shut out the storm.” This would tell us that she is shutting out all the people’s opinions or judgments that they have, of the two being together, by the use of personification which further justifies why I believe it to be of the people’s opinion. It then goes on to say “And kneeled and made the cheerless grate blaze up, and all the cottage warm.” This is a metaphor as the grate cannot “blaze up” without the necessary steps. This leads me to believe that it is actually about the lust that the narrator feels for this women. This is further supported by the effect of the words “blaze up” these are emotive words and people often link the words passion and blaze, which would again highlight his lust for this women. Browning’s intent here is to show that his lust is bad and causes dire consequences. This feeling of lust quickens the rate of decay. When taking into consideration in this play that immediately after he admits that he has some form of emotional attachment to her, he strangles her with her own hair.

Browning uses a similar technique in the soliloquy of the Spanish cloister. Browning uses sibilance for effect, this works because people relate the S noise to the hissing of a snake which is important in this period of time. “With Sanchicha, telling stories, Steeping tresses in the tank.” The repetition of the S gives the audience a feel that this monk isn’t as divine as he leads us to believe. In this poem the monk is so envious of his brother Lawrence that he has strayed from grace. The snake noise which I spoke about, would again show this Jacobean audience that this monk is in fact envious of his brother. Also throughout the poem he tells us about his thoughts of making his brother fall from grace. The repetition highlights the extent to which he has gone thinking about it. “Once you trip on it, entails” this tells us he isn’t loving and is untrustworthy this makes the audience understand that he has a warped and misguided view on Brother Lawrence. The narrator also mentions Satan which would provoke the audience to finally see that this monk is in fact misguided. ”Or, there’s Satan!” here the speaker is tempting the fact of striking a deal with Satan. This aggravates the audience to finally abandon this monk as a valid figure of religion.

Othello has another crucial flaw which helps aid his envy; wrath. Othello admits that he can sometimes allow his anger to cloud his judgement. His anger is clearly depicted in act 3 scene 3 when Iago twists Othello’s thoughts and convinces him that Cassio is sleeping with Desdemona. His rage towards Cassio is then clearly shown through sibilance which has substantial importance. “Within these three days let me hear thee say that Cassio’s not alive.” The S sound is repeated 4 times in one sentence. The S sound is important as it is linked to a snake which is the animal which tricked Eve into eating the fruit from the tree of knowledge, I believe this links directly to both of Othello’s key flaws being one of the seven deadly sins. This is crucial to this time as the audience would have been religious and to highlight this to a highly religious Jacobean audience would have a huge effect on the way in which these people would view Othello and how his character has changed.  They would realise he has been consumed by his rage, Shakespeare wishes to highlight Othello’s rage. The ways in which Shakespeare and Browning use sibilance are very similar and I believe this is since they both come from a time where religion is respected highly and atheistic views were condemned.

Inside scene three of act one of Othello, Shakespeare uses imagery and repetition to show what I infer to be one of the major imperfections in character within this tragedy. Iago verbally expresses, “I hate the moor”. This particular word is intentionally utilized by Shakespeare to reveal to the audience how Iago views the relationship between himself and Othello, which evidently is ungenuine. Shakespeare used the word ‘hate’ because of the paramount and significant definition it holds. I see that when Iago uses the word ‘moor’ he is talking about Othello as previously in the play, when Iago and Roderigo are discussing Desdomona and Othello’s commitment to each other which wasn’t long before Act one scene three. Additionally “moor” is defined by a male with a dark complexion, who is predominantly from an Islamic background. In this play there is only one character that could fit this description which I believe reassures the audience he is referring to Othello.

Within the same scene we can see Iagos flaws of paranoia becoming apparent, Shakespeare uses repetition as a device to display Iago’s paranoia. When Roderigo leaves, Iago makes it obvious to the audience that it is a soliloquy, by saying “I hate the moor, And it is thought abroad that ‘twixt my sheets he’s done my office. I know not if’t b true yet I..” Here is another example of his paranoia. Shakespeare does this to create the notion to the audience, that his hatred is expanding and this displays the extent of his hate towards Othello very well.

The Laboratory is a poem written by Robert Browning which was published in 1844. In this poem I think that Browning has used figurative language in the same way to present flaws in most if not all characters. Stanza three line ten it becomes apparent that revenge, hatred and anger are all put into this character. Looking in to this quotation we can see that the character exclaimed, “Pound at thy powder, — I am not in haste” from this quotation and my own knowledge of the poem, we can learn that the protagonist is a female in a laboratory with an apothecary. Almost instantly the audience is inclined to believe that the woman is instructing the apothecary to pound the paste, this is the poison the apothecary is producing. It is stated clearly that she is in no rush, I believe that Browning has done this to show how significant it is that the poison is made correctly with no fault. Being almost certain, the apothecary in the lab is used to jobs of this sort, she has come with special requirements for the poison to be a paste. With the apothecary taking his time and being focused, this will enable him to do make a high standard poison. This shows that she has been warped by something to make her hell bent on performing this act.

Browning begins early on with this line. He uses alliteration, I am confident with my deduction that he has used alliteration to display the action of making the paste. As a result of this quotation we can see this character’s fatal flaws, are hatred and revenge. Displayed here are her fatal flaws which are anger and hatred, they have changed her so much she is able to wait patiently without complaining. When compared to Othello we can see that there are some instances which are similar, the only differences I believe is that they are displayed differently this is because many characters have similar flaws.

To conclude I believe both poets use different instances of figurative language to display similar themes. Some effects that they use these devices for are similar and I believe this to be because religion is still a key figure at this point in time. Although they do also differentiate at times, as a result i believe both are amazing writers who have used figurative devices to display flaws in character.

my creative writing coursework

I awake as the sunlight pierces through the makeshift curtains and shines onto my face. The sun warms up the left side of me, and the sand grains make their way into my ears and nose as I frantically toss my head to get the sun out of my eyes. It didn’t help. I sit up; looking around trying to get my bearings. The cloth is still covering the holes in the tank. The opening at the top of the tank is exposed, this worries me but to my left still lies Sammy, which meant we were okay.

As I walk over to the opening, I feel a sharp jolt pierce the ball of my foot. I must of stepped on a nail was my first impression, but once I looked I realised it was one of Sammy’s Lego bricks. He never picks them up, ever. Like debris. I then clamber to the top with a soft throbbing sensation coming from the ball of my foot. I search for any signs of movement. All I can hear is the noise from the birds which is normal for this time in the morning. I decide to sit; my bum resting on the hatch with my feet swinging as the daylight shines on the back of my neck. I ponder to myself thinking this tank must have been here well before we moved in, it was covered in rust, well the side we could see. The other was submerged in the sand riddled with holes. The sun was surprisingly comforting.

I miss my life before. Life without responsibility. Life where I wasn’t responsible for someone else. I miss my life.

We all woke up the same. With only the ability to clutch at distant memories, but they were all hazy and you can only remember certain things. You can see a person but never a face, we could only remember a building but never where it was, we could remember a conversation but only certain parts. I hear rustling and footsteps as the sand grains scraped against the metal under someone’s feet. I jump down quickly looking around. It was Sammy, he was looking through the bags.

“Have we got any more apples?”

“No, but we’ve got an orange.”

The look on Sammy’s face told me he wasn’t impressed with my choice. I laugh as I throw him an apple from the bag of fruits. I ask him if he is okay and he nods as he takes a huge wet crunch. I Lay down again, I can’t  sleep. I cant let Sammy be by himself. I take an apple out of the bag and sit up. Sammy had a look of bewildered amusement as if I had done the most bizarre thing in the world. “What?” I ask.

“Usually you would go to sleep. What’s wrong?” I could see him worrying, but I wouldn’t want him to.

“Nothing I’m just not tired.”

He frowns and looks down at his apple.

“Can I go to the hatch?”

No valid reason as to why he couldn’t go came to mind, so I nodded, and he climbed up like a little monkey. Once he reached the top, he put his bum on the edge of the opening and pulled himself out. He sat how I had sat this morning, legs swinging sitting on the edge of the opening. I Tell Sammy to get back in. He doesn’t reply. This time I shout

“SAMMY GET IN!”

Again no answer. I climb to the hatch to see where he is. There he is. Trying to shout but his mouth is duct taped and his hands and legs tied.

He is trying to wriggle free from two figures in all black with tops that read M.O.C.D . One guy is waiting in the driver seat of a truck ushering them to hurry. I jump off the tank immediately sprinting towards them. As I run over, I begin to feel as though everything is slowing down, even me. As I get close I can see their grip loosening on Sammy. The individual holding Sammy’s feet can’t let go fast enough. This means I am able to land a solid punch to his jaw. He falls straight to the floor. I spin around feeling sluggish. The other one has already dropped Sammy and is halfway through the process of kicking me. His boot is going to hit me but where is most important? It is headed directly for my stomach. So I continue to spin and allow the boot to hit me in the hip. It hurt a lot. I begin to swing my fist towards it, but I was grabbed from behind and my arms held back. Another slow but equally painful boot lands in my abdomen.
